Lisa B. Boardwine
The essence of places Lisa has traveled has provided a wealth of inspiration. It is this Spirit of Place that comes through in her work. Her experiences and visual memories are shared in her paintings. Mark making, altered surfaces and the essence of landscapes are a common thread that runs throughout her work. From the old stone walls, eroding architecture, graffiti, grand vistas, sunrises and sunsets, glimpses of landforms and marks left behind, these all culminate to form an experience within her work. She enjoys the beauty found in creating a history of surface, stories embedded within and echoes of the past coming through. The work is complex, yet subtle, intuitive and fluid, sensitive while remaining strong.
Artist's Statement: My painting process involves layers upon layers of applying paint. Using various tools for adding texture and interest, I build up and tear down, dissolve through and scrape back, excavating and unveiling to recreate a sense of the mysterious through many layers of media. The addition of mark-making and asemic writing also adds to the history of the surface. I work on cradled panels, paper and canvas. My work sometimes contains collage, gold leaf, powdered pigment, marble dust and graphite, In this process, I cherish the freedom I have found to experiment, express, and explore the world through my work.
